Extra worked examples
✍️ Extra example (Term 3 needs Term 2): two angles on a straight line are 3x + 20° and 2x − 15°. Find x.
- 1(3x + 20°) + (2x − 15°) = 180°The geometry of Term 3: ∠s on a str line add up to 180°.
- 25x + 5° = 180°From here it is a Term 2 equation: collect the like terms.
- 35x = 175° → x = 35°Inverse operations. Check: 125° + 55° = 180° ✓
✍️ Extra example (Term 4 needs Term 1): a rectangle is 8 cm long and 6 cm wide. How long is its diagonal?
- 1d² = 8² + 6²Term 4: the diagonal cuts the rectangle into two right-angled triangles, so the Theorem of Pythagoras applies.
- 2d² = 64 + 36 = 100Term 1's squares.
- 3d = √100 = 10 cmTerm 1's square roots.
