📖Grade 11 Mathematics: curriculum guide & study tipsRead more ▾

Grade 11 is widely considered the hardest year of high school mathematics — and the most important. Almost every Grade 11 topic is directly examinable in the Grade 12 NSC papers: the trigonometric identities, reduction formulae, circle geometry theorems and quadratic theory learned this year all reappear in matric. Universities also look closely at Grade 11 final marks when making provisional offers, so the November examination carries real weight beyond school.

Topics by term (CAPS)

Term 1

Exponents and surds, equations and inequalities (completing the square, quadratic inequalities, simultaneous equations, nature of roots), and Euclidean geometry (circle theorems).

Term 2

Functions (effects of parameters, average gradient), trigonometry (identities, reduction formulae, trigonometric equations), and the June examination.

Term 3

Trigonometry continued (sine, cosine and area rules; 2D and 3D problems), analytical geometry (equation of a line, inclination), finance (nominal vs effective rates, depreciation), and probability.

Term 4

Statistics (ogives, variance and standard deviation), measurement, revision, and the November examination.

How you'll be assessed

Grade 11 November papers follow the NSC two-paper format: Paper 1 (algebra, functions, finance, probability) and Paper 2 (analytical geometry, trigonometry, Euclidean geometry, statistics), each typically 150 marks over 3 hours in the final examination. Many provinces write common Grade 11 papers, several of which appear on this page with memorandums.

Study tips from the classroom

  • The circle geometry theorems must be known word-perfectly, with their reasons — they are worth marks in both Grade 11 and Grade 12.
  • Build a single summary page of all trig identities and reduction formulae and revise it weekly.
  • Nature-of-roots questions follow predictable patterns; practise every variation from past papers.
  • Do not neglect finance and statistics — they are the most formula-driven, highest-return topics for marks per hour of study.
