About this video
A Grade 11 class test on exponents and surds, answered step by step: exponential equations by a common factor and by the k-method, expanding a surd bracket properly, simplifying with a common factor, and why you cannot take the root of each term separately.
What it covers
- Exponential equations: a common factor, or the k-method
- Squaring a two-term bracket: write it twice and FOIL
- Simplifying surds: √27 = 3√3
- Splitting the exponents to take out a common factor
- A difference of squares under a root
Extra worked examples
✍️ Extra example: simplify (√2 + √8)²
- 1(√2 + √8)(√2 + √8)Two terms in the bracket: you may NOT square each term — write the bracket twice.
- 22 + √16 + √16 + 8FOIL: √2 × √2 = 2, √2 × √8 = √16, √8 × √8 = 8.
- 3= 2 + 4 + 4 + 8 = 18√16 = 4.
✍️ Extra example: solve 3x + 1 + 3x = 36
- 13x · 3 + 3x = 36Split the exponent.
- 23x(3 + 1) = 36 → 3x = 9Common factor, then divide by 4.
- 33x = 32 → x = 2Same bases: equate the exponents.
