Try to Beat Me: Integers

About this video

Five timed integer questions — brackets, two minus signs side by side, roots and powers — then the full working for each, with no calculator. Pause the video and try to beat the teacher.

What it covers

  • Brackets first, then × and ÷, then + and −
  • Two minus signs next to each other make a plus
  • Powers of negative numbers: (−2)³ = −8
  • Add under a root sign first — never take the root of each term
  • No calculator: the method earns the marks

Extra worked examples

✍️ Extra example: −6 − (−3) + 5 × (−2)
  1. 1
    −6 + 3 + 5 × (−2)
Two minus signs next to each other make a plus.
  2. 2
    −6 + 3 + (−10)
    × before +: 5 × (−2) = −10.
  3. 3
    = −13
    Left to right: −6 + 3 = −3, then −3 − 10 = −13.
✍️ Extra example: √(9 + 16) − (−3)²
  1. 1
    √25 − (−3)²
    Add under the root first — √9 + √16 = 7 would be wrong.
  2. 2
    5 − 9
    (−3)² = (−3) × (−3) = 9: the bracket squares the minus too.
  3. 3
    = −4

Exercises to try

Work each one out, then click to reveal the answer.

  1. 1
    Calculate (−8 + 3) + 6.
    Show answer ▾
    −5 + 6 = 1 (brackets first)
  2. 2
    Calculate −4 − (−7) + 3 × 2.
    Show answer ▾
    −4 + 7 + 6 = 9
  3. 3
    Calculate √25 − (−2) + 1.
    Show answer ▾
    5 + 2 + 1 = 8
  4. 4
    Calculate √(36 + 64) − 3 + (1 − (−4)).
    Show answer ▾
    √100 − 3 + 5 = 10 − 3 + 5 = 12
  5. 5
    Calculate (−3)³ + 12 ÷ (√9 − 1).
    Show answer ▾
    −27 + 12 ÷ 2 = −27 + 6 = −21
